Euro American Musics

Euro American Musics

Students participating in this workshop explore how European musical traditions influenced early America and how American music inspired European composers.

One look at orchestral premieres since 2000 will reveal an abundance of pieces by European composers, an increase that can be traced to powerful European influencers with American orchestras.

AMERICAN MUSIC ABROAD

American musicians draw upon influences from European cultures for inspiration when creating music of any style: blues and jazz, folk traditions, rock music, pop or country genres are all integral parts of the American musical experience.

This collection comprises works by major nineteenth-century composers in orchestral, chamber music, piano, and song genres; most were written in Europe. While symphonies and concertos weren’t particularly profitable for American publishers since they could easily import European editions; solo piano works, songs, and small scale choral pieces did sell well enough for American publication to be financially feasible; these genres are all represented here by major nineteenth century composers.

AMERICAN MUSIC IN PARIS

Paris was an epicenter for jazz during the 1920s and 1930s, thanks to American enthusiasts’ promotion of clubs and concerts by American jazz enthusiasts from America. However, with World War II came its demise; after which came World War II itself. But after the war’s conclusion came World War II itself; following World War II ended and new generations of musicians brought the music back from obscurity – eventually reigniting its popularity postwar era.

Today, Paris is a cultural melting pot where French and European musics coexist harmoniously. A typical music store may feature an assortment of regional folk and popular tunes from Europe as well as 20th century styles like jazz or rock music – while light music from Europe such as medley overtures, potpourris, dances or quadrilles is also abundantly represented.

Rappers Jay-Z and Bellows recall Josephine Baker’s dual love for America and Paris through the song ‘Jai Deux Amours’ (literally “I have Two Loves”). It also pays homage to African-American artists seeking cultural acceptance in Paris as well as modernizing French chanson through glamorous singers such as Dalida as well as contemporary American trends such as psychedelia and disco. Together these elements create a dynamic soundscape, both sensuous and grave at once; its themes include themes like segregation, war, resistance versus segregation and resistance that include themes such as racism segregation, war, resistance vs segregation as well.
